My First Week With Habitat

Great people, building houses, and a donut a day... yes please.

I've finished my first week with Americorps working with Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley. I'm in Morgan Hill (South San Jose) and it is great.

Shout out to Travis Ukestad and his Family for putting me up for a few days and now I have a pool house room with a family and so far it seems like a great place to be.

We are building 6 houses here and with the help of TONS of volunteers we should be done with them toward the beginning of next summer. Wednesday- Saturday we have close to 20 volunteers each day ranging from high school kids to corporate groups to retired guys who really know what they are doin and are a lot of fun.

Everyday there is something different to do and different people to teach or to be taught by, or to just figure stuff out with. Something I realized early on is that it's not about how much work we can get done, but about making sure volunteers have a good time and that the families have a beautiful house when it's finished.

I could have a good time just stopping work and have a donut no matter what I'm doing, but building houses with great people makes it all the better.

I'm so grateful that God put me here rather than some of the places I had in mind.

Give me more than the life I see...

What God takes pleasure in making.

I was thinking the other day about wether or not God likes all of our technology and gadgets and “brilliant things” we've thought of. It's definitely one of the best ways for us to prove our worth in this world, but does God ever look down and say, “wow thats amazing, I mean the earth and the stars and the amazing intricacies of our bodies and souls are pretty cool, but that particle accelerator, wow.” No, I'm pretty sure that's not what He says. It could be He's proud sometimes of the things we create, but lets face it, they are all His creation we just do different things with them.

What I do know is that when He sees the relationships we build He is stoked. I think He probably even loses His mind sometimes when He sees the pure beautiful relationships that are built on him. Even the shortest ones lasting only a few months a few days or even minutes. I think about what has made the most impact on my life and this beats anything else by far. Every meaningful friendship that God leads me in is worth more than a million different ipods and plasma tvs. So why not take some more time out for those friendships, and not just the ones you've had forever, but the new ones that might need some extra attention. Jesus will be pumped.
